  • Interview about EWA Network´s 2. Female Scriptwriter’s Residency in Berlin

    What was your motivation to apply to European Women´s Networkßs scriptwriter’s residency ? How did you expect it to help the development of your project ?

    I was searching for international feedback on my project TESTOSTERONE STORY and I found the information about EWA Network’s residency. I  was already aware of EWA Network’s activities, but somehow I hadn’t yet found enough time and energy to register as a member, with my busy everyday life.

    By applying for the residency I registered for an EWA membership, so this was already a great chance! And I thought that maybe, if I was lucky enough, I would also get a great and precious chance to spend one month in Berlin writing with a true expert in script-writing – a real win-win strategy. So it didn’t take much more for me to decide I would apply.

    I knew that with TESTOSTERONE STORY I was touching an important and relevant subject, but it needed much more to reach the quality I was aiming for the script. I was sure that the combination of one month of focused work with the help of a great tutor would help enormously and I was actually right. I am a mother of 3 kids so you can imagine how busy I am in my ordinary working days and how hard it is for me to find the chance be alone and write.

    Describe your first week in Berlin. Did things go as you had planned ? 

    Even if I am an experienced documentary director the story of fragile beauty of masculinity Is my first fiction project. I was so excited to finally have a chance to dig deep into the script.  The first Meeting with experienced script-consultant Suzanne Pradel went really well!  We just clicked.  I am a hard worker and so is Suzanne. So my head was spinning with all her comments, but I was really happy! Exhausted, but happy to learn something new and to have one month ahead without my 3 kids. I love them but we need our time, right?

    What has Suzanne Pradel’s expertise brought to your project ?

    We met a couple of times during my stay and all meetings pushed the project ahead. Suzanne is always well prepared. What is also important to emphasize, is that she has the ability to listen to your wishes and goals, and to help you find the way to express them.

     

    Where does your project stand today ?

    Actually we are moving step by step and I am happy about it. In one month I am going back to Suzanne’s to continue working together on the new version of the script and to rewrite the final promo material for the project. So please keep your fingers crossed for us so we can make big shift in the fall.

    Looking back, would you recommend EWA Network’s scriptwriter’s residency ?

    And if yes, to whom ?

    I would recommend it highly! I think every woman can find her own way to benefit from EWA Network’s residency.

    Despite the fact that I am back in a rollercoaster of everyday duties with all the other projects and my kids, I keep a memory of the residency as an important and precious kick off which pushed me so much ahead. It also helped me build up my self-confidence as a female author with a unique view on things.  One month „alone“ with your script baby can make miracles. It also works as a „therapy“ because you finally have time for yourself to evaluate your life and make set your priorities, which is so hard in ordinary busy days. And this is so important because most of the time we are afraid to make big step in our life because we want to be perfect and we are scared to make mistakes. Thanks EWA Network for this great opportunity! And last but not least: Berlin and sisterhood are great and we need some fun – so I if you have a script – apply!! :)).

    Apply for the EWA Network 2019 Edition of the Scriptwriter’s Residency in BerlinEWA scriptwriter’s residency programme is an initiative dedicated to supporting the career of the next generation of screenwriting talents among members of the European Women´s Audiovisual Network (EWA). It helps them to enter the industry with the best script (feature films only) possible by working on the strategic positioning of their project. Its purpose is to give a selected woman scriptwriter or director the opportunity to be mentored by a script consultant, to work with her before the Berlinale and to attend the EFM at the Berlinale 2019 to make connections.

    Who is eligible?
    1     female scriptwriter, screenwriter/director or screenwriter/producer with a European nationality and resident in Europe (47 Council of Europe countries) having written or directed at least one feature film (fiction or  documentary) distributed (Theatrically/TV/wide festival trajectory) in one European country. No screenwriter teams are accepted.
    2 who is an EWA member. If you are not an EWA member you can join us now 
    3 who has a first draft of a script in English for a full length feature film. Fiction only.
    4  the principal photography of the film should be done in Europe

    Elements to be provided:
    1 CV in English
    2 copy of valid ID
    3 Draft script in English
    4 Synopsis in English
    5 Project status information
    6 Motivation letter for the residency in English.
    7 Evidence of release of previous films

    A commitee of three industry experts will select the best project among those received.

    The Offer: travel costs from and to Berlin. accommodation in a private room + access to a kitchen in Berlin starting from 17 January 2019 – and ending 17 February 2019, including four working sessions with a well-known script consultant (3 in Berlin + 1 Skype session after the Berlinale) and accreditation for the Berlinale.

    The EWA scriptwriting residency and the script consultancy must be mentioned in the credits of the later film.

    Suzanne Pradel is the script consultant attached to the programme.

    Suzanne is an international script consultant, lecturer and bookscout. For many years, she has been working as a script expert for European Filmfunds. In 2009 she founded the BUCHSCOUT AGENCY which specializes in novel-to-film adaptations as well as international script consultancy, developing sophisticated TV features and cinematic features.

    Jurypräsident – Klaus Eder - Filmkritikern  und Generalsekretär des internationalen Filmkritiker- und Filmjournalistenverbandes FIPRESCI und Ehrenpreisträger des 15. Filmfestivals Türkei Deutschland. Klaus Eder ist 1939 in Augsburg geboren. Er studierte Germanistik in Stuttgart und ist seit Mitte der 60er Jahre als Filmkritiker tätig. Er arbeitete u.a. für den Bayerischen Rundfunk und schrieb Bücher über Andrzej Wajda, Luis Bunuel, Nikita Michalkov und Andrei Kontchalovski, Arturo Ripstein, Im Kwon-taek, Nagisa Oshima, Die Chinesische Fünfte Generation. Von 1986-2007 kuratierte er das FilmFest München. Er ist Berater zahlreicher internationaler Filmfestivals.


    Suzanne Pradel     ist international tätige Content Developer, Script Consultant, Sales Agent und Autorin. Nach vielen Jahren als freie Lektorin und Dramaturgin für Produzenten, Verleiher, Förderer und Sender hat sie sich 2009 mit der BuchScout Agentur selbständig gemacht. Suzanne Pradel ist Mitglied des Verbands der deutschen Film- und Fernsehdramaturgie (VeDRA) und des European Women‘s Audiovisual Network (ewa), deren „Female Scriptwriter Residency in Berlin“ sie betreut und für die sie Schulungsprogramme konzipiert und als Dozentin durchführt. Für Europäische Filmfunds arbeitet sie zudem seit vielen Jahren als Projektgutachterin.

    Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun studierte Film an der UCLA und der Bilgi Universität in Istanbul. Im Jahr 2000 begann er Dokumentarfilme zu drehen. 2009 drehte er seinen ersten Langspielfilm „Uzak Ihtimal“ (Der falsche Rosenkranz). Der Film lief in mehreren Wettbewerben nationaler und internationaler Festivals und erhielt unter anderem in Rotterdam den „Goldenen Leoparden“. Seinen zweiten Film „Yozgat Blues“ drehte er 2013 und feierte damit internationale Premiere auf dem Filmfestival in San Sebastian. Er erhielt mit dem Film auf dem Filmfestival in Adana den Preis für den besten Film und auf dem Sofia Film Festival den Preis „Best Balkan Film“.

    Kyra Scheurer Dramaturgin für Film und Fernsehen Kyra Scheurer ist freie Filmdramaturgin und künstlerische Leiterin des Schnitt-Festivals „Filmplus“. Nach dem Studium der Kommunikationswissenschaft und verschiedenen journalistischen Tätigkeiten absolvierte sie eine Ausbildung zum Script Consultant und arbeitet seitdem freiberuflich als projektbegleitende Dramaturgin und Montage-Beraterin. Seit Februar 2007 ist Kyra Scheurer Mitglied im Vorstand von VeDRA, dem Verband für Film- und Fernsehdramaturgie, seit 2016 dessen stellvertretende Vorsitzende. Beim Schnitt-Festival „Filmplus“ ist sie seit 2009 als Leiterin der Programmsektionen Dokumentarfilm und Kurzfilm sowie Kuratorin der Sparte Themenschwerpunkt tätig.

    Tuba Ünsal  Schauspielerin, Produzentin und internationale Markenbotschafterin. Sie studierte Schauspiel an der Stella Adler Academy in Los Angeles. Sie spielte in mehreren TV-Serien, Spielfilmen und Theaterstücken. 2017 gründete sie die Produktionsfirma „To be House of Production“ und produzierte Theaterstücke wie „İsimsiz Yıldız“ (Namenloser Stern) und „Kürk Mantolu Madonna“ (Die Madonna im Pelzmantel), in denen sie auch mitspielte. „Dünyanın En Güzel Kokusu“ (Der schönste Duft der Welt) war der erste Spielfilm, den sie produzierte. 2012 veröffentlichte sie das Buch „Benim Komposto Günlüğüm” (Mein Kompotttagebuch), in dem sie von ihrer eigenen Schwangerschaft berichtet. Auf der internationalen Markenkonferenz MARKA 2016 war sie die erste, die einen Vortrag über die Tätigkeit der Markenbotschafterin als Schauspielerin hielt.

  • March 11: “This is a man´s and woman´s world“

    During the first workshop of the 2018 edition of EAVE’s Producers Workshop taking place in Luxembourg from March 8-15, Suzanne Pradel (DE) and Simona Nobile (IT) will give an introduction into how we can challenge the way we shape women and men in our films. In addition, the scriptwriters attending the workshop will go deeper into the topic of developing powerful female and male characters in group sessions and individual meetings with the script tutors.

  • March 11-13: How do we get out of the box of patriarchal thinking in storytelling?

    “This is a man´s and woman´s world”

    At the EAVE producers workshop the script consultant Suzanne Pradel will talk about how to challenge the way we shape women and men in our films and become an innovative creator of female and male characters.

    Suzanne will question what impact do patriarchal thought patterns have on character development. As filmmakers, how do we influence the fictional presentation and perception of women and men? What are the new tools for shaping characters in a more balanced way? What does it mean to activate a more feminine gaze on the world no matter whether you are a man or a woman? How we can help give birth to new perspectives and create more sensitive and visionary characters?

    Trough a keynote, a sensing journey and one-to-one sessions she will analyze the characters in the scripts and help to enrich them using new development approaches and tools.

    Simona Nobile´s keynote will be about female archetypes and Alessia Sonaglioni will present the European Women´s network.

    This special workshop is a cooperation between EAVE producers workshop and the European Women’s Audiovisual Network (ewa).

    In 2009 she founded the BUCHSCOUT AGENCY which specializes in novel-tofilm adaptations as well as international script consultancy, developing sophisticated European TV features and cinematic features.
    In 2018 she additionally founded the SERIENSCOUT AGENCY which specializes in the development of  serial content. Suzanne  is a member of the German Association of Script Consultancy (VeDRA) and is a member of the European Women´s Audiovisual Network (ewa).
